Seat covers protect your upholstery from pets, kids, work clothes and spills. They also hide wear on an older car. The wrong cover slides around every time you get in, bunches at the seams, or blocks parts of the seat you need.
Before you buy car seat covers online, decide between universal and custom fit, then check your seats against the listing. This guide covers both.
What is the difference between universal and custom-fit covers?
Universal covers use stretch fabric and straps to fit a wide range of seats. They cost less and you can move them to another car. Expect a looser look and some shifting.
Custom-fit covers are cut for one make, model and year. They follow the shape of your seats and leave openings for levers, belts and headrests. You pay more and must enter your exact vehicle details.
Are seat covers safe with side airbags?
Many cars have side airbags built into the outer edge of the front seats. Look for a label or tag on the seat side that mentions an airbag. A cover over that area must let the airbag deploy.
Only buy covers listed as side-airbag compatible for those seats. These covers use a tear-away seam on the airbag side. If a listing does not mention airbags, skip it for the front seats.
How do I measure my seats?
Use a tape measure and write the numbers down in inches or centimeters, whichever the listing uses.
- Seat width: across the widest part of the backrest.
- Backrest height: from the seat cushion to the top of the backrest, without the headrest.
- Cushion depth: from the backrest to the front edge of the seat.
- Rear bench: the full width, plus the width of each split section.
Which seat features change the fit?
Look at your seats and note each of these before you compare listings.
- Headrests: removable headrests need separate covers; fixed ones need a cover shaped for them.
- Rear seat split: covers for a 60/40 bench will not fit a 40/20/40 bench and fold correctly.
- Seat-mounted seatbelts and child-seat anchors: the cover needs openings for them.
- Armrests and cup holders: check for zip or flap openings.
- Heated or cooled seats: thick covers slow down heating and can block ventilated seats.
Which material should I pick?
Choose by how you use the car.
- Neoprene: water-resistant, good for beach, gym or outdoor use.
- Faux leather: wipes clean, suits families with kids.
- Fabric and mesh: breathable in hot weather, easier to wash.
- Heavy canvas: tough enough for work vehicles and pets.
How do I install seat covers so they stay put?
Start with the backrest, pull the cover down, then push the straps or tabs through the gap between the backrest and the cushion. Pull them tight underneath and hook them to the frame, not to wires or motors. Fit the cushion cover last and check every lever, belt and anchor still works.
